My crystal ball for development teams

I consulted my crystal ball for development teams. Here’s what it showed me — and the spoiler is that all of this is less than a year away.

With AI coding assistants, developers will write code far faster. And that changes everything.

Here’s what I see coming:

The end of the “line-of-code churners.” Those who type without understanding the client’s need will have to adapt, and fast. The real value shifts toward understanding the architecture and the organization’s needs, not typing speed. Thankfully, they’re not the majority.

Delivery pressure multiplied. When the pace explodes, functional and business analysts will feel the heat to keep up. Great opportunities open for those who know how to feed the machine.

The language matters less. We’ll build in Python or Go because they’re readable, then convert to C++ or Rust when performance demands it. No more need to write directly in the sharpest language.

New roles to manage. The “AI-assisted developer” will need less expertise in a specific language, but a stronger command of architecture.

Products being born. Ideas that weren’t profitable yesterday will become viable overnight.

The end of the SaaS dictatorship. Why fight to configure a product that never does exactly what you want, when you can rebuild it quickly, in the language of your choice, with all the room to evolve?

Managers discovering the bill. And, at the end of the month, the steep tab for the tokens consumed.

That’s what my crystal ball whispers for the year ahead. We’ll see which of these predictions come true first.
